Steve Freeman

Management

Since starting working professionally in software in 1970, initially as a Civil Servant, I have worked on various projects developing software; first of all large government systems in Cobol and Assembler, then low-level communications on real-time radar systems, in assembler and Coral 66.

For 19 years I lectured for Marconi on computer languages, design techniques, analysis techniques, real time principles, radar systems maintenance, radio systems maintenance, the Capability Maturity Model, and various other topics. During part of this time I was also a network manager.

When working for Marconi my clients included the Royal Air Force, Royal Danish Air Force, Malaysian Airforce, Logica, National Air Traffic Service, Aerothai (Thai Civil Aviation Authority), BAe, Marconi, TRW, Soundcraft, British Telecom International, and many other companies.

In 2000 I left Marconi to run my own independent training and consultancy company. Since then my clients have included Thales Training and Consultancy (Thales Université), BAe Systems, AMS and Cap-Gemini. I have both lectured and worked on development systems including High Integrity systems (SIL3) requiring a good understanding of DO178b DEF STAN 0055 and DEF STAN 0056.

I have developed SIL3 software for part of an avionics control system and investigated software for safety on a SIL 3 avoinics system

I have recently run courses - as a subcontractor - for General Dynamics and Logica CMG

I believe that software should be developed to the highest possible standards.

Courses run by SFCT are about best practices. Students are taught how to produce high quality products.

They are actively encouraged to think critically about the strengths and weaknesses in any process that they are using, and encouraged to always look for ways of improving such processes.

On language courses they are encouraged to identify the strengths and shortcomings in the language they are learning and thus how to avoid the shortcomings and make the most of the languages strengths.

My goal is that they should be aware of and apply best practice in their work.
